Shadows are present on the backs of objects, but most of Hong’s paintings do not have shadows. In “Skulls II,” there is no shadow, only the “skull” itself. The skulls, dolls, plants, and other iconographies in the artist’s works form a unique allegory. They are both rhythmical and serious, expressing a dual appeal of lightness and heaviness. As a result, some viewers find them lighthearted and fun, while others see the opposite side of the story.
