In Hong Kyoungtack’s ‘Green Green Grass’ series, rather than employing the patterned everyday motifs and vivid colors that had become emblematic of his earlier work, the artist turns to landscape as a primary subject. Using subdued tones instead of primary colors, he begins to present a markedly different visual language.
The golf courses, skies, outer space, and Mount Everest that appear in these works may seem unrelated to his previous subjects; however, through these motifs, the artist reveals landscapes as objects of human dreams and desires. Beneath their beauty, he uncovers our underlying desires and obsessions. In this sense, the landscapes in Hong’s work are no longer romantic scenes that inspire dreams, but rather beautiful vistas that have been reduced to objects of desire.
